When a cardiology examination is recommended
A cardiology examination is recommended whenever symptoms such as breathlessness, palpitations, chest pain or tightness, dizziness, or fainting are experienced.
It is recommended even in the absence of symptoms for those:
- Has cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, overweight, family history of heart disease);
- Engages in regular or competitive sports activities;
- Must start a new training program;
- is over 40 years old as a periodic preventive checkup.
What symptoms of arrhythmia should not be underestimated
Cardiac arrhythmias can manifest in different ways, from mild discomfort to more important symptoms. It is good not to underestimate them:
- Palpitations (irregular, accelerated or “skipped” beats);
- Sense of breathlessness or shortness of breath even at rest;
- Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting;
- Pain or tightness in the chest;
- Sudden fatigue or marked weakness.
If one or more of these symptoms appear suddenly or recur over time, it is important to see a cardiologist for a checkup and, if necessary, to perform an electrocardiogram or Holter ECG.
How long does a cardiology examination take and how to prepare for the examination?
It lasts an average of 30-45 minutes; it is helpful to bring previous examinations, list of medications and show up at rest, avoiding exertion or coffee immediately before the visit.
